Gion Hatanaka

Gion Hatanaka is what people come to Kyoto to see. Located in the heart of the Gion area away from the touristy souvenir shop and steps from Yasaka shrine, it offers first class ryokan (traditional inn) hospitality: elegant interiors, gardens and top class kaiseki cuisine. Here, you can experience the quiet elegance that few neighbourhoods in the city can offer with everything you need to see around you: Kiyomizu-dera temple, Maruyama park, Yasaka shrine, narrow machiya (townhouse) lined streets, and the elegant geisha quarters.

Kyoto Cuisine and Maiko Evening

The best of two worlds: traditional Kyoto cuisine (Kyo-ryori) and maiko-san (apprentice geisha). Gion Hatanaka's "Kyoto Cuisine and Maiko Evening" is exactly that, an evening to experience. The full course dinner is beautifully presented, consisting of seasonal ingredients. And while you dine, you are introduced to two maiko who perform dances they've trained years for. The most unique part of the evening, however, is meeting the maiko. This is a special experience that only patrons of geisha in the past could enjoy. When the EDK team we there, we were very impressed with the maiko. They were friendly, attentive and made sure you enjoyed your evening. The guests are also a mix of Japanese and non-Japanese, making for a more natural atmosphere rather than a tourist show. After dinner entertainment consists of traditional drinking games with the maiko, so prepare yourself. Altogether, it makes for an attractive package. Talking to the tables around us, some overseas guests were repeat visitors. Whenever they visit Kyoto, they just have to come back to Gion Hatanaka. * Shows are done in English and Japanese
